Learn Why Your Air Conditioning is Blowing Hot Air

When it’s so hot outside, the last thing that you want to deal with is a lack of cool air coming from your air conditioner. It is extremely frustrating, to say the least.

Don’t despair. When your AC is blowing hot air, there are a few main reasons why, most of which are quick fixes. Here are some tips to help you.

Turn it On

flipped-switchAt the risk of being overly obvious, is the thermostat turned to “cool”?

It’s possible that it is still on “heat” from the winter.

“Auto” won’t necessarily get the cool air going.

Make sure that it is on the right setting before you even start on the rest of the possible causes.

Leaking Refrigerant

In order to blow cool air, your air conditioner requires a certain amount of refrigerant.

Sometimes your air conditioner can spring a leak in one of its parts, and the coolant seeps out.

For this particular problem, you’ll need to call for professional repairs and inspection.

Check the Condenser

It’s a good idea to take care of the condenser outdoors because if it gets too dirty, or if there is debris blocking the air flow, you won’t get cool air inside.

Make sure that there are no bushes, trees or other matter in the way on a regular basis.

Check the Filter

Always change your air filter monthly. If it gets too dirty, the air won’t flow properly.

What’s worse is that condensation can freeze on the filter, blocking air flow and creating a leaky mess around your air conditioner.

Frozen Coils

Sometimes your air conditioner will freeze up on you. This commonly happens if you turn the thermostat down super-low.

frozenThe coils freeze and the only air circulating is coming from the motor, which is hot.

The solution to this problem is to let your unit thaw.

You’ve got to turn it off and wait.

To keep this from happening again, keep your thermostat at 72°F.

Blown Breaker Switch

Have you dealt with a power surge lately? It’s possible that you’ve blown the breaker switch for your AC.

Check to make sure that it is in the right position.

Blown Compressor

For a variety of reasons, you might be dealing with a blown compressor.

Compressors don’t last forever, and when this important part goes, your air conditioner won’t function properly.
