How Old Is Your Furnace?

The average life expectancy of a furnace is between 16 and 20 years old. If yours is older than that, you may need a replacement. To get an idea of how old your furnace is, try:

  • Pulling off the removable door on the outside of your furnace and looking for a label or tag that listing the furnace’s serial number or manufacturer’s date
  • Look for a sticker or tag that gives a date when the furnace was last serviced. It may also list the date that the furnace was installed
  • Call or email us a picture. Even without a serial number we may be able to give you a ballpark age just by the look and style of the furnace.

A Word on Electric Furnaces

Electric furnaces don’t lose heat up the flue because they don’t have flues. Electric furnaces typically have AFUEs (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) in the 95 percent to 100 percent range; they are among the most fuel-efficient furnaces you can buy – but they come with a catch. Electricity is a much more expensive fuel source than oil or gas, so an electric furnace only makes economic sense if you pair it with a heat pump.
