How the HVAC Unit Evolved

When the summer months are here, our HVAC units are crucial. That’s because we use these air conditioners to cool us down and keep us comfortable when it’s hot and humid outside. While most people know how important a HVAC unit is, many don’t realize the actual history behind it.

The Beginning

Back in 1820, the whole concept of air conditioning was first invented when ice was artificially created as an experiment. From there, in 1834, Jacob Perkins invented the first ever artificial ice manufacturing machine.

Thanks to this, modern compression systems were put together which really led to the idea of the HVAC unit. However, it was actually 1902 when Willis Haviland Carrier came up with the first known air conditioner.

This HVAC unit was used to control the temperature and humidity inside of a printing company. It was at this point that HVAC units really took off.

Throughout the Years

After 1902, air conditioners really transformed into something else. In fact, it wasn’t until 1906 that the term even came to be. That was when Stuart W. Cramer coined the term, which was later adopted by Carrier. Later, in 1928, the Freon refrigerant was discovered thanks to Thomas Midgley Jr.

In 1930, the HVAC unit was finally put installed into the White House. As time went on, the demand for these units began to go way up with more than 30,000 air conditioners being produced in 1946 alone. In 1953, over 1 million units were sold. HVAC units weren’t slowing down.

Later Years

As time went on, the HVAC unit started to become a staple in households. In 1990, the control systems that are found in HVAC units told became used in all parts of refrigeration and air conditioning.

Later on in 1998, Unitary air conditioners and heat pumps set a sale record never seen before for these kinds of items. There were more than 6 million units sold then.

However, in 2007, air conditioners progressed even more. A State Council issued a circular that actually limited the temperature of air conditioners in public buildings.

Now, the temperature had to be 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher throughout the summer months.

With this change, low efficiency air conditioning units were also completely banned. This law really did play a huge part in the HVAC units out today and how they are used.
